Duisburg

The Municipality of Duisburg is situated within the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Lying on the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Ruhr, it is said to be the biggest inland harbour in Europe. From its 495.668 inhabitants around 32 % come from a migration background. Since the 1970s, Duisburg has been experiencing a strong decline in its marking mining and steel industries which could only partly be compensated by the creation of new, mainly service-sector based activities.

As a consequence Duisburg today is characterised by a high unemployment rate and strong demographical losses, with marked concentrations in its disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

The City of Duisburg - in close co-operation with its Managing Authority, the State Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia - has a long-lasting experience in the implementation of integrated and participatory action plans for these neighbourhoods. It wants to share these experiences in the field of regional governance of neighbourhood renewal with the network partners but also intends to draw lessons for itself from the experiences of the Partner Cities.

Within its City-wide Development Plan, Duisburg aims at enlarging its integrated approach on additional deprived neighbourhoods of the City.

Within the City-Network 'Socially Integrative City NRW', Duisburg will work to make the main outputs from the RegGov Network accessible for those Cities in NRW that are actively involved in sustainable and integrative urban renewal.

Duisburg will exchange the experiences gained within the RegGov Network with other URBACT-Lead-Partners and with Partner Cities from the German-Austrian-URBAN-Network.
