Our Activities
We entered into implementation phase from 19th July 2010. Our kick-off meeting took place in September, where with all partners present, the first steps were discussed, expectations expressed and the three learning cluster groups began to phase their activities.

6 simple rules of successful Roma integration

Working with Roma communities, supporting their integration requires, among many other qualities, perseverance and tolerance for failure. One cannot expect quick wins or spectacular success stories; but with hard work, continuous commitment and following some simple rules we still can achieve lasting results - ones that we can be proud of.
So what are those rules? Following closely the presentations and workshops of the Roma-Net meeting held in Glasgow this November, I arrived at the following 6 key lessons.
16 December 2011 Learning Cluster 1.2 event in Glasgow

Community Engagement and Employability were the themes of the 2nd event of Learning Cluster 1 held by the City of Glasgow. The progress of the project was evaluated too and partners presented their draft Local Action Plans with their planned actions concerning community participation.

03 November 2011 Next Learning cluster event: Glasgow, 22-24 November

The second event of Learning cluster 1 will focus on community engagement and the theme of employment-employability.

Roma-Net partners met in Bologna to discuss the theme of employability. Main issues were: transitional or intermediate labour market, the social economy and social accounting.

The Baseline Study of Glasgow, Roma-Net partner for the phase II is now available.
01 June 2011 Roma-Net at the Brussels seminar „Cities and Regions –joining forces for inclusion of Roma populations

Roma-Net project was presented by the Mayor of Udine at the above seminar organised jointly by Budapest, EUROCITIES and the Committee of the Regions under the logo of the Hungarian EU Presidency on 31st May 2011. The main findings of the seminar can be found here.

15 April 2011 Integrated approach – the magic tool?

Roma-Net partners gathered in Almería on 29-31 March 2011 to explore the key themes of learning cluster 2: Integrated and area based approaches to tackling exclusion and segregation including the application of an integrated area based approach to service provision; tackling segregation using housing improvement; and inclusive approaches to area based regeneration.
13 April 2011 EU framework for National Roma Integration Strategies issued
The European Commission communication „An EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies" was published on 8th April in Budapest at the Roma Platform meeting.

25 January 2011 “Nothing about us without us”
The city of Udine hosted the first learning cluster event of Roma-Net on 23-25 November 2010. The theme was Active Community Engagement which included three learning components: social marketing, active community engagement and anti discrimination.

04 August 2010 Roma-Net entering into implementation phase
After the decision of the Monitoring Committee, Roma-Net has officially entered into implementation phase from 19th July 2010. During the coming 30 months, the project will meet both local and transnational objectives.

10 December 2009 Preparation of our Baseline Study

In the Roma-Net project we are following a two-phased approach for the collection of information for the baseline and for the local mapping exercise. To kick-start our partnership working, and in advance of the first Steering Group Meeting, the lead expert asked all partners to complete an information request to
- supply background information about the city, demographics and economic performance; and
- provide information about the Roma populations, where and how they live in the city.

How do you eat an elephant?
Roma-Net was officially set off on 16-17 September 2010 and a huge elephant (metaphorically speaking) was served up to the participants. Participants felt like ants having to eat a huge and still growing elephant without fork and knife but, we were not discouraged as we cut off a much more manageable piece and started our planning!

The second Steering Group Meeting of the network was held on 17-18 May in Budapest. This meeting replaced the 22 – 23 April meeting which was cancelled due to the volcanic ash incident which closed most of the European airspace.
