Municipality of Faenza giuliano.borghi[at]comune.faenza.ra.it[CV]

Faenza is a middle size city, strategically located on the Aemilian way at the cross-road with the route from the Port of Ravenna to Tuscany in the very heart of Emilia-Romagna Region. Its economic system mostly consists of SMEs operating in mechanical, agri-food processing, textile and ceramic sectors. Faenza was the first city in Italy introducing the choice to address urban development policies towards territorial sustainability and sustainable building into its General Regulatory Plan over 10 years ago. At present, a new Municipal Structural Plan (MSP) is under development. It will be connected to the MSP of 5 neighbouring municipalities and will focus on environmental sustainability, economic and social planning options. Faenza new MPS will mainly lay on the needs of intervention for historical centre sustainability and will identify the parameters, indicators of current performance, improvement actions and future scenario, as far as the element of urban sustainability. A recent experimental study, carried out to compare energy performances before and after the realization of small sustainable interventions in the historic centre, showed a CO2 emission reduction of more than 13 000 t/year; it also showed that this intervention are possible only if new planning tools are developed, environmentally, socially and economically sustainable and necessarily shared by citizens and stakeholders.
