After the political changes in 1989 Leipzig had to face severe structural changes and losses of population during the 1990ies. Today Leipzig can look back to a successful transformation: Quality of life improved e.g. via city wide urban regeneration processes, unemployment rates are decreasing and the population of Leipzig is continuously growing again since 2001. A strong inwards migration prove the positive development towards an attractive city, open minded for economy, education, culture, science and housing.

The City of Leipzig started to tackle its challenges since the 90ies with strategic approaches to urban development. More than a decade's experiences with the implementation of integrated processes gave the city a strong committment for the principles of the "Leipzig Charter". A reason for Leipzig's City Planning Office and Office for Urban Regeneration and Residential Developmentto to become engaged as LC-FACIL's Lead partner.
