Magdeburg is the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt and has a population of 230.000. With 1200 years of rich and colourful history, Magdeburg is one of the oldest cities in the New Laender of the former East Germany. The city wants to use science as motor for urban and economic development and therefore develops an old not longer economically used harbor district near to the city center to be re-shaped as a "Science Harbour" with lots of space for innovative companies and scientific institutions

Lead expert plays a significant role to  push things into the right direction. In case of the REDIS project this part is taken by Dr. Willem van Winden. He is an expert in the field of urban and regional  development and strategies and he was involved into numerous international studies and projects and has written several books and articles concerning this field. Currently he is working at the Rotterdam school of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam and he is the research manager of SECURC (Sino European Comparative Urban research Centre, based in Shanghai, China.
