Magdeburg is the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt and has a population of 230.000. With 1200 years of rich and colourful history, Magdeburg is one of the oldest cities in the New Laender of the former East Germany. The city wants to use science as motor for urban and economic development and therefore develops an old not longer economically used harbor district near to the city center to be re-shaped as a "Science Harbour" with lots of space for innovative companies and scientific institutions

Lead expert plays a significant role to push things into the right direction. In case of the REDIS project this part is taken by Dr. Willem van Winden. He is an expert in the field of urban and regional development and strategies.  He was involved in numerous international studies and projects in these fields. Recent research and advisory work includes the following topics: the development of science parks and other ‘knowledge locations’ and clusters in cities; The economic aspects of local/regional ‘green’ policies; regional knowledge-based economic development; developing new methods of mapping the local knowledge economy.

Dr. van Winden is (co) author of several books and many articles in the field of urban and regional development, strategies and policies. Currently, Dr. Van Winden is the CEO of a consulting firm, UrbanIQ; also, he is a professor in the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
