UNIC Meeting reports

During the implementation phase, 9 UNIC meetings took place.

These reports give an overview of the case studies, working groups conclusions and common projects.

  • Working groups meeting in Aveiro 19-21 July 2009
    This second workshops session was the opportunity to discuss the five topics of the working groups, and to hold a public seminar on the theme: "Is innovation the solution for the ceramic sector?"

  • Conference in Stoke-on-Trent 28-30 October 2009
    This conference was linked with the organisation of the British Ceramics Biennial, the UK's leading showcase of contemporary ceramics.
    The plenary UNIC meeting was focused on the elaboration of the local action plans.

  • Conference in Castellón 16-18 February 2010
    This conference was linked with QUALICER 2010, the global forum on ceramic tile.
    During the working sessions, the focus was the elaboration of the local action plans, before their submission to the European Commission in May 2010.

  • Conference in Limoges 15-19 June 2010
    This international ceramics week gathered all UNIC cities as well as Asian partners from the City of Limoges. Besides the UNIC meeting, the week's highlights were the signing of a declaration of intent creating a World Ceramics Road, and the opening of the international exhibition of porcelain "De Terre et de Feu".

  • Conference in Pécs 19-21 September 2010
    This conference took place within the framework of "Pécs: European capital of culture 2010".
    Three months after the presentation of Local Action Plans in the European commission, the meeting was an opportunity to discuss the first progress made on their implementation.

  • Final conference in Delft 30th May-1st June 2011
    This last conference was the opportunity to look at the past, in order to review the lessons learnt through the UNIC project, but also to look ahead, by working together toward the sustainability of the net

Beating the crisis with UNIC - thematic presentations of case studies

This document presents the outputs of the UNIC activities, gathering:

  • the most relevant actions planned by the UNIC cities in their local action plans, within each of the five working group topics

  • the hightlights of the "Common Action Plan", describing the common actions carried out between UNIC cities during the implementation of the project

UNIC Local Action Plans

The LAP of Limoges aims at ambitious forms of innovation, namely in terms of promotion of its identity and development of technology transfer and venture capital networks.

The LAP of Stoke-on-Trent encourages and enhances the innovative partnership currently underway to improve the ceramics industry and regenerate the city with a package of measures which are focused specifically on the upgrading and growth of its ceramic cluster.

The Municipality of Faenza aims to strengthen the relationship between players to impulse partnership in the local ceramics sector, and the LAP duly focuses on networking activities, such as conferences, events and publications.

The LAP of Cluj Napoca aims at developing a mix of services, infrastructure and events to support a emerging sector of creative industries, with a strong focus on ceramics, building on the local university and on the infrastructure of the former ISIS Ceramic Factory.

The LAP of Pécs is closely linked with the programme of Pécs, European Capital of Culture 2010, and converge in particular in the actions related with the development and animation of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.

The core of Delft’s LAP is a large project to establish a Museum Factory originally at the premises of Royal Delft, the main surviving company, which is expected to become the centre of all local activities around ceramics: to bring image and identity of ceramics in Delft together.

The LAP of Sevilla aims at the touristic and entrepreneurial promotion of the ceramic cluster, including craftsmen, through the development and promotion of a “Ceramics Map” and by supporting renewal works in the city making use of ceramics materials, while at the same time promoting the technological cooperation between industry and the well known university and associated technological sectors through collaboration projects.

The LAP of Aveiro aims at  introducing more innovative processes in the industry cluster – ceramics, to anticipate, prevent and address the economic, cultural and social consequences of changes and to encourage industries to move effectively towards a sustainable innovation economy linking research and education, economy, culture, social and urban promotion.

The LAP of Castellón aims at strengthening local industry, by improving the cooperation model between research and industry and city image, through the use of ceramic tiles in street boardwalks and in buildings.

Working documents - Draft of UNIC LAPs

The last meeting of Stoke-on-Trent, in october 2009, was the opportunity for each partner to present a draft of their Local Action Plan.

This document presents the main actions and priorities that each UNIC city partner contemplates for the development of its LAP.

Baseline study, September 2008

This document, which is the main output from the development phase, includes:

  • an assessment of local policies and practices which have already been implemented, and an analysis of practices, methods and tools which could be implemented by partner cities or could be suggested to the partner cities,
  • a report on the expectations, prime concerns and requirements of the partners with a view to refining the activities to be undertaken by the network,
  • the definition of the organisational and content framework for the programme, taking account of the first two elements (detailed agenda and time-planning, division of tasks and identification of required inputs, definition of lead questions, intended outcomes etc.).
