This article explores some of the work that three forwarding thinking employers from Basingstoke (UK) and Sabadell (Spain) are doing to bring out the best in their workforce in order to forge a long term competitive edge.

This recipe also includes several serving tips showcasing what some European medium sized cities have done to position themselves and to attract inward investment.

The fourth ESIMeC recipe focuses on how medium sized cities cities can prepare their local young people for the world of work. It looks more specifically at how education can contribute to equipping young people with the skills needed by employers. It presents the key ingredients and utensils required to provide young people with the right skills, attitudes and attributes to enter the world of work.

This recipe also includes a serving tip - a pro-active approach to improving the perception of higher education and skills amongst business and society in Gävle, ESIMeC Swedish partner.

The third ESIMeC recipe focuses on how cities can capitalise on the economic potential of climate change. It looks more specifically at the opportunities for workforce development offered by the green economy. It presents the key ingredients and utensils required to develop an effective employment strategy to ensure cities make the most of the opportunies for workforce development offered by the green economy.

This recipe also includes a serving tip - a pro-active approach to green growth in Albacete, one of ESIMeC's partner cities from Spain.

The second ESIMeC recipe focuses on the role of the triple helix co-operation in workforce development. It presents the key ingredients and utensils required for effective three-way partnership working between university, municipality and business to ensure a strategic and concerted approach to skills development and provision at local level.

This recipe also includes a serving tip - an example of effective triple helix co-operation in Debrecen, ESIMeC partner from Hungary.

The first ESIMec recipe focuses on effective partnership working at local level. It highlights the key ingredients and utensils necessary to set up and facilitate partnerships that reflect and address local needs and achieve tangible results.

The ESIMeC brochure presents the project, its aims and objectives and its nine partners.

The ESIMeC baseline study is the result of several months of research, partners meetings and partner visits. Developed by Alison Partridge, the ESIMeC lead expert, the document includes:

- a State of the Art presenting some key findings on the impact of the recent economic crisis and the various initiatives developed at European, national and local levels to promote recovery

- partner profiles presenting each ESIMeC partner and focusing on the existing needs and expertise relating to economic development

- a synthesis presenting the issues that will be addressed by the project

The baseline study was an invaluable document in helping the partners identify the shared challenges and experiences and determine the key areas where learning and new knowledge would be most valuable and useful. It also helped identify how ESIMeC would be the most beneficial for medium sized cities to achieve sustainable economic recovery, growth and resilience.

Workforce developmentt and demand-led skills strategies were identified by all the nine ESIMeC partners as an aera with great potential as a foundation for economic growth.
