The challenge facing Gateshead within this context is that because it has no university located within its metropolitan borough, there is a clear need to work closely with the excellent range of nearby university institutions, and to ensure that their focus is increasingly aligned to the needs of the Gateshead economy. To date partnership working in projects between the council and universities has been limited so this will represent a key challenge in driving forward the Local Action Plan for the RUnUP network. It is the role of the council to identify its innovation-driven local growth and development strategy and to identify the required role of its regional universities and knowledge based enterprise support providers in supporting this development.
The main role of the Gateshead ULSG will be to:
- Develop comprehensive programmes that will bring universities, the business sector and the public sector together to drive forward economic development.
- Provide structured support to start-up companies, providing strategic consultation and helping the expansion of companies through partnership working.
- Ensure university curricula meet the needs and requirements of local businesses.
- Influence appropriate local economic regeneration practices and policies.
The Gateshead ULSG has broadly agreed with the opportunities identified by the baseline study.
