Over the last two years URBACT has been supporting 36 cities within 4 Implementation Networks. Implementation Networks were designed to focus on different challenges linked to delivering integrated and sustainable strategies for urban development.
What is implementation and how can I get started?
The moment cities start to implement a project or strategy is a key milestone, it marks the point where the theoretical becomes reality. Implementation is the process of undertaking a series of actions to deliver the objectives and goals within a strategy. Many cities struggle to separate the WHAT, and the HOW.
By placing an emphasis on the process (the ‘HOW’) cities have been able to understand why some actions are successful and other less so, thus allowing for lessons to be learnt and implementation to be improved around the city.
Focusing on the ‘HOW’!
Before starting to think about implementing a strategy or project it is first necessary to check that your city is ready. By understanding local conditions it is possible to plan implementation and anticipate the inevitable bumps in the road.
Based on the experience of the URBACT Implementation Network cities, a short guide with practical tools has been developed on becoming ‘implementation ready’:
Dealing with the challenges ahead
Being successful in implementation is important because if things are implemented badly the consequences are severe. The URBACT programme has developed a series of guides which develop the different challenges linked to implementation and highlight some practical tools which can be used by cities to achieve success in implementatio
