Data Baselines: Ensuring You Have the Data You Need (webinar)

On Wednesday, March 13th, 2024, the Network Beyond the Urban held its first webinar entitled "Data Baselines: Ensuring You Have the Data You Need" by the AdHoc Expert, Mar Santamaria Varas. Her experience combines strategic and integrated urban planning, participatory processes, and data analytics for public policies.

The thematic focus of the webinar revolved around data analysis as a powerful tool to inform decision-making and public policies in the urban environment. During the session, we addressed the decision-making cycle: data for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluation/management.

Prior to the webinar, participants needed to complete a short questionnaire to indicate their starting point and their relationship with data analysis decision-making.

The session began by understanding the expertise of the participants and informing them that they all had different access to data, different data needs, and skill sets. However, understanding what is appropriate for their own territory and addressing the right questions would help them advance in their strategies and policies. In data, a one-size-fits-all system doesn’t work.

In the next section, the focus was on how data can empower decision-making. We started by presenting the general framework on data technologies, discussing the revolution of open and massive data, data storage, data computation, and delving into understanding how the decision-making cycle works.

To ensure that every territory participating in the webinar could formulate the right questions for its own strategies, a variety of case studies were presented to illustrate how different questions require different approaches.

The last part of the webinar involved participants working in small groups where they were asked to complete a Miro board to report the type of data they are collecting, the methods through which they collect it, and the purposes for which they use it. By sharing with other territories with similarities, they were encouraged to identify some of their data gaps. At the end of the exercise, each group presented their findings.
