Residents of the Future on University Campus

Work-Life Balance in the Mediterranean Style. On Thursday, December 5th, the Technical Polytechnic of Zagreb (TVZ) hosted a presentation about Šibenik, showcasing it as a city where it’s possible to develop a successful career while enjoying all the benefits of the Mediterranean lifestyle. The event was part of the URBACT project – Residents of the Future, which addresses the challenges of depopulation and population loss in small towns.

Representatives from the City of Šibenik, the Trokut Entrepreneurship Center, and the Šibenik Fortress of Culture visited TVZ's Borongaj Campus to highlight the advantages of living and working in Šibenik. The focus was on the IT sector and creative industries, with special emphasis on "work-life balance," a concept increasingly relevant to young people today.

The delegation was welcomed by the dean of TVZ, Prof. Dr. Jana Žiljak Gršić, who underlined the importance of collaboration between universities and local governments to ensure quality professional opportunities for young people. Nikolina Gracin from Šibenik’s Department of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Development echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that this event marks the beginning of stronger cooperation between smaller cities and educational institutions in Zagreb.

City representatives presented the Trokut Entrepreneurship Center, showcasing the opportunities this business incubator and coworking space offers to young people to develop their business ideas. Also, through the story of Šibenik Fortress of Culture, they introduced students to the city’s potential in the creative industries and its status as a center of internationally recognized cultural events.

A survey conducted during the event revealed that most students are actively considering where they will live after graduation, with 70% yet undecided. Students listened with interest to the opportunities Šibenik offers for living and working, admitting they were somewhat surprised since no other city had presented itself to them in this way. Many confessed they had never considered moving to a smaller city, as their focus has largely been on bigger cities or abroad. Larger European and global metropolises are continuously promoted through music, films, sports, and culture, while smaller cities like Šibenik need to find innovative ways to connect with young people.

With initiatives like this, the City of Šibenik aims to position itself as a city of the future for young professionals, combining the Mediterranean way of life with modern business opportunities.
