The European Innovative Transfer Network Future STEAM Cities, funded by URBACT IV and integrated by the Cities of Aveiro (PT), Oulu (FI), Alytus (LT), Plock (PL) and Kolding Business (DK), aims to explore and transfer innovative approaches to STEAM education, digital skills development, and urban talent attraction.
Following our first and second webinars “Beyond STEAM Education: Can we imagine the future of STEAM education?” and “Exploring the “A” in STEAM – Where science, technology and creativity meet”, we are now turning our attention to one of its core questions - Attracting and retaining talent.

European cities are increasingly facing common challenges related not only to education and innovation, but also to attracting, developing and retaining talent. Ensuring a strong pipeline of qualified human resources is essential to respond to the needs of local entrepreneurial ecosystems and to support sustainable urban development. Strengthening technical and specialized training in strategic areas—particularly within STEAM fields—is therefore critical, both in terms of job opportunities and the availability of skilled workforce.
Our upcoming Future STEAM Cities webinar will take place on 26 MAY, between 10 and 12 CET on the topic: 🎯 “Talent retention in STEAM cities: How can we attract, develop and keep skilled people in our territories?”
Aims of the webinar:
- Examine the key challenges cities face in attracting, developing, and retaining qualified talent, particularly in STEAM-related sectors.
- Share good practices and city experiences in aligning education, training, and skills development with evolving labour market needs.
- Explore the role of municipalities, education providers, and local ecosystems in building attractive and resilient environments for talent.
- Identify effective strategies to strengthen technical and specialised skills development in priority areas for local competitiveness and innovation.
- Foster dialogue and collaboration among cities, stakeholders, and experts to generate actionable insights for policy and local implementation.
