Summary

Giulio Hasanaj (1991) is a fixed-term Research Fellow (Type A) in Architectural Technology and Environmental Design at the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence (DIDA). He collaborates with the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) on projects funded by Next Generation EU, within Spoke 5 – Urban Biodiversity, Activity 3 Urban Forestry: Integrated and Sustainable Design.
He is a qualified Architect (2016, with honours) and holds a PhD in Architectural Technology and Environmental Design (2021, awarded with “excellent” evaluation). He has carried out research and teaching activities in Italy and abroad, collaborating with universities such as Nanjing University and Tongji University (China), the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Université Internationale de Rabat (Morocco), and Our Lady of Good Counsel University in Tirana (Albania).
His scientific activity focuses on three main areas:
• climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban contexts;
• enhancement of urban biodiversity through Nature-based Solutions and Natural Infrastructures;
• performance assessment and environmental simulation using digital modelling tools.
He was a postdoctoral research fellow in the PRIN 2015 project “Adaptive design and technological innovations for the resilient regeneration of urban districts under climate change conditions” and in the national programme for university residences, where he worked on the development of methods and tools for the design of collective housing in accordance with Law 338/2000 on student accommodation.
He has taught in master’s degree programmes and postgraduate courses at DIDA and in international programmes, including:
Laboratory for Urban Resilience and Metabolisms, MSc in Planning and Design for Urban and Territorial Sustainability;
SUArch – Sustainable Architecture & Smart Cities, Université Internationale de Rabat;
Laboratory of Innovative and Intelligent Materials and Processes, MSc in Design;
Architectural Technology Laboratory, Single-cycle Master’s Degree in Architecture.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Architectural Technology (SITdA), the inter-university research centre TESIS, and the Nature-Based Solutions Italy Hub, where he acts as contact person for DIDA.
Author and co-author of more than 30 scientific publications, he has presented papers at national and international conferences on urban regeneration, climate resilience, and architectural environmental and technological design. His most recent publications include Urban Forestry and Biodiversity in Green Plans, Regulations and Programmes in Central Italy and Islands (Springer, 2024) and Nature-Based Solutions and Natural Infrastructures for Environmental Design (Maggioli, 2025).
He has organised study days, seminars and international workshops on sustainable design, ecological transition and architectural and urban design for climate change, including DE(A)LS IN LUMEN, Urban Strategies towards Sustainability, and Design in the Anthropocene.
He regularly participates in national and international architectural design competitions focused on urban regeneration, environmental sustainability and climate resilience, working in multidisciplinary teams on architectural and urban projects, with particular attention to sustainable construction techniques, public space regeneration and ecological restoration design.
Among the competitions he has taken part in are: Rammed Earth Pavilion and Tili Wine Guest Homes (Buildner Architecture Competitions, 2022); New European Bauhaus Prize 2022 with the project Adapting Public Spaces to Climate Change (European Union, EU relevance); ReLive 2019 – Designing Urban Regeneration In Vivo (SITdA, national relevance); 9th i-Rec Student Competition and UIA-PHG International Competition (international relevance); Place and Displacement – Integrating Refugee Populations within Cities (IDEA, 2018); African School Project – Education for the Future (finalist project).
He has also taken part in international research and training programmes as a Visiting PhD Student at Nanjing University and Tongji University (China), focusing on micro-architecture, urban regeneration and health-oriented design in urban environments.
He speaks Italian, English and Albanian, and has advanced skills in the main design, modelling and environmental simulation software (ENVI-met, i-Tree, AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, V-Ray).
