Summary

Dr. Maja Donovski Lukarevska is a senior urban planner and urban anthropologist specializing in human-oriented urban design, socio-spatial dynamics, and sustainable regional development. Trained at the intersection of spatial planning and urban anthropology, she is an expert in bridging technical administrative frameworks with the tangible, social needs of local communities. Her practice focuses heavily on translating high-level planning strategies into inclusive, human-scale environments that prioritize the quality of public life.

An academic-practitioner with a PhD in Urban Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Tourism, she excels at integrating cultural and natural heritage preservation within statutory and regional planning documents, consistently anchoring her work in human-scale spatial design and the ethnographic approach to observation of public life dynamics.

In tandem with her formal planning expertise, she excels at leveraging co-creation, peer-to-peer learning, and participatory workshops to bridge the gap between institutional frameworks and community-driven stakeholders. Actively engaged in international knowledge-sharing, she frequently represents spatial planning advancements on regional panels and conferences sharing insights on the planning models across the Western Balkans.

Maja brings a holistic, interdisciplinary perspective to sustainable urban development, successfully managing the delicate balance between technical precision, digital innovation, and community-led placemaking. As an URBACT Ad-hoc Expert, she brings deep contextual expertise to sustainable urban development, heritage-led urban regeneration, and tourism networks across the European neighborhood and the Western Balkans.
