Summary

I have been working in the field of temporary use since 2009 as a project manager at ZZZ – ZwischenZeitZentrale in the city of Bremen, Germany. ZZZ is an implementation-oriented project that initiates and manages its own temporary use projects while also supporting others across the city. As a project manager, I connect different stakeholders, advise the administration, and organize workshops to identify the needs and expectations of users, neighbors, and local political actors.

In collaboration with the city of Bremen, I have been involved in the URBACT projects TUTUR and REFILL. In both projects, we shared our best practice experiences from Bremen with partner cities. Since 2023, our office has been organizing the national network on temporary use (Netzwerk Zwischennutzung) in Germany. Through this work, I have gained comprehensive knowledge of existing projects, as well as the challenges they face and strategies to overcome them.

In 2024, I supported the Greenplace network as an Ad Hoc Expert, providing insights on the activation of vacant and underused spaces, with a focus on sustainable and community-driven approaches.

Additionally, our office has developed concepts for brownfield sites and vacant buildings in several German cities, linking temporary use with long-term urban development goals and in collaboration with partners.

In my experience, short-term projects on vacant sites are an excellent instrument to initiate new uses, involve people in urban development, and reintegrate spaces into active city life. They also contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions and help to develop long-term perspectives.
