Summary
Robert Joseph Martin Ph.D is an architect, urban planner and mobility expert based in Copenhagen. His work lies at the intersection of planning, mobility and urban strategy, with a focus on how cities can reduce car dependency and implement sustainable transport systems. With an education background in architecture from both Australia and Denmark, and a doctorate from Aalborg University, Robert combines research insight with practical experience from urban development projects across Europe.
He has led projects supporting modal shift from car use to active mobility, contributing to municipal climate strategies and more inclusive access to everyday transport. His doctoral research explored how cities can reduce car use through spatial interventions and governance reforms. Conducted partly at Yale University, it focused on autonomous transport, shared mobility systems and planning tools such as visualisation techniques, participatory design and backcasting. He has also facilitated cross-sector workshops with planners, municipal staff, private operators and researchers to help cities test new approaches and coordinate local action.
Robert is a partner at Beta Mobility, a Nordic consultancy specialising in sustainable mobility. He advises cities, developers and operators on integrating sustainable transport into urban areas. He contributes to digital tools like Autoatlas (an AI-based car-mapping platform) and a mobility index that uses open data and AI to assess any location based on 15-minute city principles. Working in a digital office, he regularly facilitates online workshops using Miro and Teams.
He has collaborated directly with city administrations, including as lead consultant on projects embedded in municipal green mobility strategies. His work focuses on aligning public goals with implementable plans, providing clear structures, timelines and stakeholder engagement strategies, while also incentivising meaningful contribution from the private sector. He also contributes to EU-funded projects, including as advisory board member on the DISCO project and as supporting consultant in the Share North Squared project.
Robert is a founding member and steering committee member of the BLOXHUB Mobility Network, board member of the Danish Car Sharing Association, and founding member of the national mobility network Mobilitet til frokost. He has authored reports and guidance materials for cities, helping translate complex planning issues into clear, actionable outputs. His approach is grounded in user behaviour, urban form and practical governance, aiming to help cities design systems that are inclusive, implementable and locally anchored.
