Five Cities, One Conversation: What STEAM Is Teaching Us About the Future of Cities

The latest article from the Future STEAM Cities URBACT Network explores how five European cities — Aveiro, Alytus, Kolding, Oulu and Płock — are testing, adapting and rethinking the role of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) in shaping more resilient, innovative and inclusive urban futures.

Rather than simply replicating a model, the network shows how each city is translating the STEAM approach into its own local context — through experimentation, collaboration and continuous learning. From education and talent retention to community engagement and economic development, STEAM is emerging as a powerful tool for connecting people, ideas and opportunities.

The article highlights key insights from the Adapt phase of the project, including local testing actions, stakeholder engagement and the development of investment plans that will support long-term impact across the partner cities.

Ultimately, the story is not about transferring solutions, but about building the capacity to question, test and co-create — together.
