The National Contact Points for the European Urban Initiative (EUI) and URBACT programmes hosted an Information Session on 7 May 2026 at the Hilton Hotel, St Julian's. The event brought together representatives from local councils, public authorities, and other stakeholders to learn about current funding opportunities and cooperation initiatives available through these European programmes.

The session aimed to increase awareness of the support available to Maltese local authorities while encouraging participation in transnational projects that promote sustainable urban development, innovation, and knowledge exchange.

The event commenced with a networking business breakfast, allowing participants to engage with fellow attendees and establish new professional connections. The Information Session was officially opened by Mr Emil Vassallo, Director General for Local Government, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of European collaboration in addressing urban challenges and supporting local development.

The first part of the programme focused on the European Urban Initiative (EUI). Presentations delivered by representatives from the EUI Secretariat provided an overview of the upcoming Innovative Actions Call 4 and the City-to-City Exchange initiative. Participants gained practical insights into the opportunities available for cities seeking innovative solutions and international cooperation. A testimonial from Aradippou Municipality in Cyprus offered a valuable perspective on the benefits of participating in EUI activities and exchanges.

Following a networking coffee break, the focus shifted to the URBACT programme. Participants were introduced to the Call for Action Networks and learned how cities can collaborate to address common urban challenges through integrated and participatory approaches. Testimonials from representatives of Longford County Council, Ireland, and Hradec Králové City, Czechia, showcased successful experiences and demonstrated the impact of transnational cooperation at the local level.

The session concluded with presentations from the Environmental Resources Authority, the Planning Authority, and Servizzi Ewropej f'Malta, which highlighted the support mechanisms available to local councils and organisations interested in accessing European programmes and funding opportunities.

The active participation throughout the event reflected the growing interest among Maltese local authorities in European urban initiatives and reinforced the importance of collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing in building more sustainable and resilient communities.
