Cities and social media - The Genoa Final Conference

Edited on 11/06/2018

In this period of general crisis of social media, cities offer important solutions to promote the civic use of platforms which can increase economic development, civic participation and local marketing in urban contexts. The experiences of ten European cities, partners of the European Interactive Cities network, funded under the URBACT program, will be the core of the final conference of the project, which will take place in Genoa from 11 to 13 April.

In these three days Genoa will be the capital of social innovation and the heart of the debate involving local administrators, technicians and experts from cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Ghent, Palermo, Murcia, Tartu, Debrecen, Alba Iulia and Varna, in addition to the main key players of the Italian debate on the use of social media in the public administrations.

The leitmotif of the final conference will be the twelve guidelines on the use of social media for urban growth, implemented during these two years, which will also involve representatives from the cities of Helsinki, Eindhoven, Madrid, Turin, Milan and other major European cities. The objective is to continue the dialogue with the main social media platforms and the EU institutions in the following years.

The good practices on the use of social media experimented during the project, will, hopefully, inspire other public administrations that want to adopt similar policies in the use of social networks, facilitating the economic growth, thanks to the collaboration with startups and small and medium-sized enterprises as well as encouraging the involvement of citizens in public life.

The public event, will take place on April 12 at 17 at Palazzo Tursi and will be the occasion to present to the Genoese citizenship the cities’ experiences within the project and the results achieved with the Integrated Action Plan.

It will be possible to follow all the activities and the event of the final meeting on the social media channels of the network, Facebook and Twitter, with the hashtag #interactivegenoa.

All the stakeholder and the local actors that Genoa has involved in its strategy for a new digital storytelling of the city, will take part to the meeting sharing their experiences of collaborative participation.

Interactive Cities is a unique experiment in Europe on the civic role of social platforms, giving for the first time to cities a key role in the debate of digital development.
