March 24-26 2025, Alba Iulia is hosting the Residents of the Future APN transnational meeting. The project is in full swings and there are a lots of things we need to discuss, share and improve. So, let's get to work and make some real impact.  

Welcome to Alba Iulia

The city of Alba Iulia, is often referred to as Romania’s "other capital" due to its immense historical significance. Since 2026 it will be known also as the official romanian "National Capital of Youth". Today it welcomes representatives from several European cities for an engaging transnational meeting aimed at fighting the negative impach of demographic changes. So, it would be fair to say that, in the following couple of days, Alba Iula became the capital of the Residents of the Future Network. 

 

Tiago Fereira: We are in the 3rd stage of the project. Are we ready for Finale?

Following this, Tiago Ferreira, the network’s lead expert, provided an overview of the “Project Journey,” giving insight into the step-by-step co-creation process that has guided the initiative. His presentation emphasized the strategic phases of action planning and the stage Residents of the Future APN is currently on.

Nikolina Gracin: We are doing great. We can Always do better. 

Next, Nikolina Gracin, the project coordinator, took the stage to present key project management updates. She detailed financial monitoring, budget reallocation policies, and upcoming deadlines. The update underscored the importance of careful financial planning and adherence to procedural guidelines to ensure the network’s continued success.

 

Tiago Ferreira then facilitated a peer discussion where city representatives shared insights into their project progress at the local level. Participants reflected on their challenges, achievements, and upcoming steps, fostering a collaborative environment where cities could learn from one another’s experiences (slides 12-15).

Kresimir Grubic: We have developed some really great stories. Now, let's share them. 

Krešimir Grubić, the communication officer, followed with an engaging presentation on communication activities, emphasizing the critical role of URBACT.EU website articles. He stressed the importance of storytelling in raising awareness about the network’s mission and shared guidelines on video testimonials, encouraging partner cities to collect and share personal stories that illustrate the impact of the initiative.

After a short break, the team embarked on a guided tour of Alba Iulia’s historical city center, led by a “real” Roman centurion, Mr. Ciprian Dobra. The tour provided an immersive experience into the city’s rich history, reinforcing Alba Iulia’s role as a model for heritage preservation and urban revitalization.

 

Jose Costero: Quality of life is personal and subjective. Hard to measure, but crucial for keeping the existing and attracting new residents. 

The afternoon sessions shifted the focus to the concept of “Quality of Life” in European cities. The meeting welcomed José Costero, the lead expert of the In4Green URBACT Network, who delivered an insightful presentation on defining, measuring, and promoting quality of life. His talk explored the relationship between quality of life and demographic change, highlighting strategies cities can implement to create more attractive and livable urban environments.

As the first day of the transnational meeting concluded, participants reflected on the valuable insights gained and looked forward to the upcoming sessions. With Alba Iulia as a backdrop, the discussions and knowledge exchanged set the stage for impactful collaborations that will shape the future of European cities.
