Bringing Life Back to Public Spaces: The Revival of the Park Near Corfu’s Correctional Facilities

Edited on 25/02/2025

What was once a vandalized, neglected space filled with garbage is now starting to show signs of new life! Thanks to the URBACT Re-Gen initiative, led by Kapodistriaki Development S.A. in collaboration with the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, the park near the Correctional Facilities of Corfu is transforming into a welcoming public space.

Recently, children have started reclaiming the park, showing us the importance of safe and accessible public spaces for local communities. This change is a result of continuous efforts to clean, reimagine, and revitalize an area that was once overlooked.

However, physical improvements alone are not enough—ensuring long-term impact requires collaboration at all levels. Understanding this, the European Projects team and General Manager of Kapodistriaki Development S.A. initiated extensive talks and meetings with:

  • The General Committee of Education of the Ionian Islands

  • The Primary and Secondary Education Committees of the Ionian Islands

  • The Education Department of the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands

  • The Mayor of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands

As a result, a Memorandum of Cooperation is in progress, ensuring that all stakeholders can work together efficiently, eliminating delays caused by bureaucratic procedures. This will accelerate future actions, allowing the community to actively shape and sustain the park’s transformation.

Empowering Youth: Hackathon Event for Park Revitalization

To further engage young people in this transformation, we are currently organizing a Hackathon event towards the end of February, where we expect the participation of 500+ children! During this event, youngsters will express their ideas on how to revitalize the park through:

  • Creative activities such as games and drawings

  • Sports events that promote outdoor play and community engagement

  • Surveys

This initiative will allow children to become co-creators of their urban space, ensuring that the park reflects their needs and aspirations.

These first steps mark the beginning of a larger vision—a sustainable and inclusive urban space shaped by community engagement. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to implement actions that foster a greener, safer, and more vibrant public space for all!
