2026. – a new chapter in the history of Romania’s National Capital of the Youth.
In a significant win for the city, Alba Iulia was recently named Romania's National Youth Capital for 2026. This prestigious designation is more than just a title. It represents a profound commitment to making Alba Iulia a vibrant, dynamic city where young people want to live, work, and thrive. Mayor Gabriel Pleșa and Councilor Sebastian Băeșan are doubling down on their dedication to revitalizing the city with an inclusive, youth-oriented vision.
A cornerstone of this vision is Alba Iulia’s participation in the URBACT "Residents of the Future" network. Through this project, the city is developing an online platform to serve as a hub for residents, centralizing information on local events, career opportunities, and ways to get involved in the community. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create an environment that supports young people’s aspirations.
Building better infrastructure for youth in three dimensions: physical, digital and cultural.
The city’s youth policy doesn’t stop at digital tools. Alba Iulia is also investing in physical and educational infrastructure to provide young people with reasons to stay. The development of a new dual-campus educational facility, set to open by 2026, will align training programs with local industries, including the automotive, metallurgical, and food production.
City branding is another pillar of Alba Iulia’s strategy. With its rich historical heritage and the majestic Alba Carolina Citadel, the city is enhancing its appeal through events, festivals, and tourism efforts that celebrate local culture and history. By promoting Alba Iulia’s unique identity and fostering a vibrant cultural scene, leaders hope to instill a renewed sense of pride and belonging among residents, creating a magnetic community that young people will want to join.
It’s just the first step – more work to follow.
As the National Youth Capital, Alba Iulia will also receive support for various projects aimed at empowering the city’s youth and engaging them in meaningful civic and social activities. Plans are underway to build more green spaces, improve recreational facilities, and promote sustainable practices that will create a healthier, more attractive urban environment.
Alba Iulia understands that reversing population decline requires more than just infrastructure. It’s about building a place where people see a future for themselves and their families. Through initiatives like the "Residents of the Future" project, the dual-campus educational facility, and the prestige of being the National Youth Capital, Alba Iulia is actively cultivating an environment where the next generation can flourish.
