Commemoration of the 2013 shipwreck - 3 October 2024, Lampedusa

The commemoration of the 3 October 2013 shipwreck is a solemn occasion, marking a tragic event that shook the world and highlighted the profound human cost of migration. On this day, a boat carrying over 500 migrants, primarily from Eritrea and Somalia, sank off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy. The disaster claimed the lives of 368 people, casting a stark light on the perilous journeys undertaken by those fleeing conflict, persecution, and poverty in search of safety and a better life.

This commemoration serves not only as a remembrance of those who perished but also as a call to action, urging the international community to address the root causes of forced migration and to enhance efforts to ensure safe and legal pathways for refugees and migrants. It is a day to honor the resilience and courage of the survivors, to acknowledge the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to human dignity and the protection of human rights.

Through this observance, we reflect on the lessons of the past and renew our resolve to prevent such tragedies in the future, fostering a world where no one has to risk their life to seek safety and opportunity.
