The paper emphasise how important the sustainable use of resources is in order to achieve Europe's climate targets. European cities bear a special responsibility in this regard. Their development must not only be environmentally friendly, but also socially responsible. In order to meet these challenges, the cities are calling for EU directives and regulations that reflect the realities of the situation and enable realistic standards, for example in the construction and textile industries.
Investments in innovative, system-relevant environmental technologies need support beyond the limited resources of local authorities. At the same time, cities are calling for the economy to be held more accountable for resource-friendly standards across entire supply chains. The exchange, as promoted in EU projects between cities, should be expanded and professionalised across Europe. Munich and the participating cities offer to explain the current challenges in more detail and present further practical solutions to all the demands and recommendations in the position paper.
