The Re-Gen Civic Hackathon in Albacete

On Saturday, 5 April 2025, the Re-Gen Civic Hackathon was held at the Albacete Youth Centre (Spain). The event was part of the European Re-Gen initiative, organised by CEEI Albacete in collaboration with Emilia Parra from Vértice Cultural, Laura Gómez Serrano, youth officer at the Albacete Youth Centre, and Carmen Gómez, also from the Youth Centre. The aim was to involve young people aged between 16 and 22 in the creation of innovative projects to regenerate underused urban spaces through social and sporting activities designed for teenagers aged between 10 and 18.

The day began at 9:00 a.m. with a creativity workshop led by Ángel Prieto Sotos, director of the Fundación CEEI Albacete. After the workshop, the main challenge was presented: to design an innovative, inclusive and feasible project, with a maximum budget of €2,000, aimed at creating a positive and sustainable impact in the community.

Over the course of more than three hours of intense work, the participants, divided into five teams, developed their proposals with the support of mentors and experts. The evaluation criteria included creativity and innovation, technical feasibility, economic feasibility, social impact and quality of presentation.

Winning projects

The first prize, worth €600, was awarded to the ‘More+’ team, composed of Elena Oliva Sanz, Miguel Martínez Sánchez and Meryem Elmakaoui. Their project stood out for its creativity, solid structure and innovative approach to transforming an urban space into a multifunctional centre suitable for young people with different interests and needs.

The second prize, worth €400, went to the ‘FutureMinds’ team, made up of Clara Soriano López, Dario Mora Hernández, Alfonso García Blazquez and Javier Estival Benayas. Their project, entitled ‘ConectionFest’, focused on social integration through inclusive activities for young people with rare diseases, disabilities, diabetes or similar conditions. The proposal included:

• Immersive therapy activities with animals

• A multisport area

• A basketball court adapted for use with wheelchairs

In addition, the team proposed an economic model in which 60% of ticket revenues would be donated to charity, promoting empathy and awareness among the wider youth community.

Special lottery

At the end of the award ceremony, the Albacete Youth Centre organised a special lottery among all hackathon participants. The raffle was a token of appreciation for the enthusiasm and commitment shown by all participants. The prizes consisted of tickets to cultural and sporting events in the city, offered by the Youth Centre, with the aim of encouraging young people to participate in local activities and offering them more opportunities for fun and involvement.

The event was a great success, demonstrating that the creativity and commitment of young people are powerful tools for promoting urban regeneration in Albacete. The hackathon also stood out for its inclusive approach and its aim to involve all young people in the process of improving their city.
