KAIRÓS partners visiting Cesena by Elena Giovannini, Cesena Municipality

Edited on 12/04/2022

After about two years of online meetings, the KAIRÓS partners met in Cesena on 18 and 19 November 2021 to exchange innovative good practices of urban regeneration related to areas that present phenomena of urban decay, but that could become an attractive pole of particular importance for those who live in the area.

The meeting was hosted in the Aula Magna of the Malatesta Library and was attended by delegations from the cities of Mula (ES), Sibenik (HR), Ukmerge (LT), Belene (BG), Heraklion (GR) and Malbork (PL). For Cesena the event offered the opportunity to present the first draft of their Integrated Action Plan, developed with the group of local stakeholders. It focuses on the area around the railway station which will face numerous changes in the upcoming years thanks to the launch of new services, such as the CesenaLab incubator and the new Employment Centre.

The reflections and actions within the KAIRÓS project aim at starting a participatory process to design interventions for the redevelopment of spaces and buildings, interweaving innovative projects able to transform the weaknesses of the area into an opportunity for development, social inclusion and economic attractiveness.

During the meeting the "Resilient Cities" action carried out between October and November with the help of 5th grade students of the "Ilaria Alpi" Language High School was presented to the partners. The students had conducted an in-depth analysis of the area taking into consideration the climatic aspects, urban resilience, but also the way citizens and visitors make use of the area.

On the second day of the meeting, a study visit to Bologna was organised in order to get acquainted with the urban regeneration and tactical urbanism actions carried out within the "Rock" project, funded by the Horizon 2020 programm. The visit also offered the KAIRÓS representatives the opportunity to visit the permanent exhibition of the Urban Innovation Foundation, co-funded by the European Regional Developent Fund, the tactical urbanism intervention in Piazza Rossini, the regenerated spaces of the large Dumbo complex as well as the Villa Aldini, on the hills of Bologna.

We look forward to meeting everybody again in Mula at the end of April!
