With Line No. 1 – learning and exchange @ network level – The SCHOOLHOODs network is making strong progress in both communication and planning. Two webinars on social media use, led by Viktoria Soos (ClimateSmartElephant), equipped partner cities with strategies to better engage educators, parents, pupils, and communities through authentic storytelling, creative tools, and platform-specific approaches. Partners also took part in an Intervention Logic Review, exchanging feedback to sharpen visions, streamline actions, and highlight strengths such as Skawina’s clear structure, Zadar’s inclusiveness, Parma’s solid SWOT analysis, Rethymno’s concrete plan, Turku’s strong vision, and Brașov’s concise approach. In parallel, work on a Monitoring Framework helped clarify roles, processes, and indicators, ensuring simple and effective evaluation. These achievements underline SCHOOLHOODs’ commitment to innovation, collaboration, and building smarter, safer school mobility solutions across Europe.
With Line No 2 – putting things on the ground – Across the SCHOOLHOODs network, partner cities are bringing tangible improvements to school mobility. Brno responded to community requests by installing two new zebra crossings near Tuháčkova Primary School, ensuring safer daily journeys for pupils. In Skawina, a colourful community-led initiative transformed streets around Primary School No. 3 into vibrant, engaging routes that promote walking and joy. Turku is preparing a major traffic safety pilot for a recently merged school, with measures to reduce car traffic and encourage active travel, set to launch in August 2025. Meanwhile, Rethymno successfully piloted a week of actions including Pedibus walking routes, a School Street closure, and hands-on traffic education in partnership with students, parents, and local authorities. Together, these initiatives showcase the creativity, collaboration, and commitment of cities to making school journeys safer and more inspiring.
With Line No. 3 – what else is out there? – As part of the Air-Break project, Ferrara successfully used gamification to promote sustainable mobility through four initiatives: Play & Go, Bike2Work, the High-School Mobility Challenge, and Kids Go Green. Together, these programmes engaged citizens, employees, and students in tracking and rewarding walking, cycling, and public transport journeys, combining digital tools with classroom activities and community involvement. Between May 2021 and October 2023, participants logged nearly 1.2 million sustainable kilometres, cutting an estimated 265 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Beyond the numbers, the initiatives fostered awareness, friendly competition, and lasting behaviour change, showing how playful incentives and education can reshape daily travel habits for a greener future.
With Line No. 4 - creative work with methods and tools – The “IAP Latest News” was a creative showcase of the best elements from our IAPs, presented in the lively style of a TV show. This format invited participants to take on two roles: audience member and panelist. As panelists, each person presented a single standout feature—or “best bite”—from their IAP, discussing it with the host and the audience.
