Talking Hands: S.M.ALL's Fifth Quartely Report

Edited on 13/08/2025

The first quarter of 2025 marked a turning point for the S.M.ALL network. With the Mid-Term Review completed and Integrated Action Plans reaching maturity, partner cities dived into shifting from planning to practice, launching real-world tests of the inclusive mobility solutions they had co-designed.

Make it the Slovenian way

The highlight of this period was the 7th Transnational Meeting in Škofja Loka, Slovenia (20th - 21st March 2025). Against the backdrop of a medieval town rebuilding after the 2023 floods, participants explored mobility as both a resilience strategy and a cultural asset. Keynote speakers, collaborative planning games, and peer-review workshops fostered rich exchanges — from Ferrara’s school mobility projects to Komotini’s accessibility app and Bucharest’s school zone monitoring.

Planting and flourishing

Across the network, pilot actions are now visible on the ground: safer school routes, mobility aid libraries, digital tools for barrier reporting, and campaigns for disability-friendly services. Small-scale, people-centred interventions are proving their power to shift daily habits. Cities are also integrating risk assessment tools, SMART indicators, and governance strategies to ensure that these pilots can scale and endure beyond the project’s lifetime.

The open secret

The quarter confirmed a shared truth: lasting change comes from collaboration, adaptability, and keeping people at the centre. From schoolchildren walking safely to seniors navigating improved sidewalks, S.M.ALL’s vision is becoming reality — one step, street, and conversation at a time.
