At the beginning, when we were preparing our Transnational Meeting in Jurmala planned for March 2020, we could not believe what happened around us and we tried to keep our plans, but swiftly, we realized that it was worse than expected and that we had to change our plans...

Tržnice v mestih so pogosto srce družbene vitalnosti skupnosti. Igrajo pomembno vlogo v lokalnem sistemu prehrane, celovitem razvijanju prostorov in gospodarskem razvoju nekega območja. Poleg družbenih in mikroekonomskih učinkov pozitivni učinki vitalnih tržnic posegajo tudi na druga področja: so odlični viri za zdravje skupnosti, ustvarjajo varne in živahne javne prostore, krepijo civilno družbo ter imajo ekološke in regionalne ekonomske vplive. Tržnice je tako potrebno razumeti kot prostore potrošnje in kot prostore družabnosti.

Would a strategic approach towards Local Economic Development make small cities more resilient?

Small cities are often at a higher risk for the negative impacts of global trends that lead to economic downturns. At the same time, they are the places where a significant percentage of the population of the European Union live and work. So how can we address development problems and opportunities at the local level through contextualization of global consequences and locally available resources? How can we develop resilient local governments in an age when the world is faced with a global pandemic and some cities are facing economic crisis? According to the principles of Local Economic Development (LED), local development should be approached strategically and inclusively, and challenging decisions should be guided by sustainability goals. 

This article is a follow-up to a Masterclass in Local economic development organised by the iPlace Project, a network of 10 small cities who examine opportunities for new local development and aim to find niches which will create potential for future economic growth.

EU cities explore fair finance to boost adequate and affordable housing

Local government actions to regulate housing markets and combat exclusion are showcased in a joint URBACT-UIA initiative.

A külföldiek már évtizedek óta jelen vannak Debrecen vérkeringésében, hiszen egyetemvárosként a rendszerváltást megelőzően is népszerűek voltak a felsőfokú képzések a külföldiek körében is, és ez a 21. századra tovább erősödött: mára 7000-nél is több hallgató él Debrecenben.

Leitdokument für die Stadtentwicklung in Europa: Die Neue Leipzig-Charta

Am 30. November 2020 haben die für Stadtentwicklung zuständigen Ministerinnen und Minister der europäischen Mitgliedstaaten die Neue Leipzig-Charta verabschiedet. Das informelle Ministertreffen unter deutscher EU-Ratspräsidentschaft fand aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie online statt. Bei der Veranstaltung gratulierten die Mitgliedstaaten, EU-Kommissarin Ferreira, das Europaparlament, weitere EU-Institutionen, die OECD sowie europäische Regionen und Städte zu dem gelungenen neuen europäischen Leitdokument für eine nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung. Positiv hoben sie insbesondere hervor, dass die Charta den Fokus auf Gemeinwohlorientierung und handlungsfähige Kommunen richte. Dies spiegelt auch der Titel „Die transformative Kraft der Städte für das Gemeinwohl“ wider. Die Charta bietet einen strategischen Kompass, an dem sich Gemeinden, Städte und Metropolen aller EU-Mitgliedstaaten ausrichten können. Entscheidend wird es jetzt allerdings sein, inwieweit das Leitdokument seinen Weg in die kommunale Praxis findet. Dafür müssen alle Ebenen ihren Beitrag leisten und unterstützende Rahmenbedingungen schaffen: Die Städte selbst, die Regionen und Nationalstaaten, ebenso wie die EU und die europäischen Institutionen.
