Walk'n'Roll

Despite of their size or number of inhabitants, many cities have long been designed  around cars. The URBACT Knowledge Hub on mobility brings together URBACT knowledge, tools and good practices on sustainable urban mobility offering insights on how to shift towards more inclusive, people-centred urban spaces.

EU City Lab on Active Mobility

28 - 29 October 2025, Hamburg, (DE)

The EU City Labs are knowledge-sharing events co-organised by URBACT and the European Urban Initiative (EUI). Each lab is a unique opportunity to learn more about URBACT and EUI cities’ good practices in the field of local food policies and energy transition, as well as the ways they were adapted and transferred by other cities.

The event focused on how cities can effectively promote walking, cycling, and other human-powered or soft mobility modes by addressing three key areas:

  • Changing behaviours to encourage more active mobility choices;
  • Leveraging data and technology to support smarter, more integrated mobility systems;
  • Ensuring accessibility and inclusion so that active mobility benefits all users, regardless of age, gender, ability, or location.

Gender-inclusive mobility in cities

Gender equality is one of URBACT's three cross-cutting priorities. Together with green transition and digital transformation, it represents both a key challenge and a major transformative force to ensure the long-term impact and sustainability of policy changes.

For this reason, and in an effort to find synergies between all the different issues of interest to cities, URBACT is planning activities to increase your knowledge and skills on gender equality and mobility.

As part of this offer, URBACT hosted a 1,5-hour webinar on "Gender-inclusive mobility in cities" focused on a user-centred perspective of mobility planning, exploring the barriers and possible gender-inclusive solutions for mobility models.

The webinar took place on 5 March 2025 at 14.00-15.30 CET and gathered more than 160 participants.

Walk'n'Roll Cities Guidebook

In 2022, three URBACT Networks joined forces to rethink urban mobility and explore how a shift in the mobility paradigm can create more inclusive and people-centred cities. Through the Walk'n'Roll initiative, 28 cities – from small towns to large metropolitan areas – worked together to develop a shared vision for sustainable mobility, exchange experiences and test practical approaches. Their work resulted in a series of workshops, events and guidance resources to help cities put these ideas into practice.

The Walk'n'Roll lessons were drawn from the following Action Planning Networks (2019 - 2022):

RiConnect - Rethinking infrastructure, Thriving Streets - Designing mobility for attractive cities, Space4People - mobility solutions for attractive public space
